National Green Tribunal mandates enforcement of 15% minimum discharge for downstream to maintain riverine ecology. The tribunal set aside all arguments for business and technical limitations and mandated that maintenance of releasing minimum water downstream is sustainable development’ which is part of the right to life.
It has mandated irrespective of commissioning date, all hydro electric project have to maintain this minimum discharge.
The above response is made on the submission of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation seeking exemption from releasing water to maintain 15 per cent e-flow during lean period.
